TinEye Alternatives: What to Use for Which Job

Short answer
Most TinEye alternatives are not alternatives at all. TinEye finds exact copies, crops and edits of one specific file and sorts them by oldest, which identifies first publication. Google Lens and Yandex find similar scenes instead — a genuinely different question.
Before replacing a tool it is worth being precise about what it does. TinEye is not a general image search engine that happens to be smaller than Google's. It answers one question — where else does this exact image appear, and when did it first? — and almost nothing else answers it.
What is TinEye actually good at?
Finding exact copies of a specific file, including cropped, resized, recoloured and lightly edited versions, and sorting the results by oldest so you can see where an image was first published.
That oldest-first sort is the feature people miss when they leave. A photograph first published in 2019 and recirculated as breaking news today is caught in about 30 seconds by that one control, and no other free engine exposes it as cleanly.
Which alternative should you use for which job?
Yandex for matching buildings and scenes, Google Lens for landmarks, products and text, Bing as a second opinion, and AI geolocation when the scene has never been published anywhere at all.

Read down the third column and the picture is clear: for four of six questions TinEye is the wrong tool, and for two of them nothing else is right. "Alternative" is the wrong frame — these are complements.
Is there a free tool that does everything?
No, and the ones advertising themselves that way are usually aggregators that submit your image to several engines and show you their results. That is convenient, but it adds an upload to a third party for no capability you did not already have.
Running two or three engines yourself takes about a minute and keeps your image out of an intermediary. The engines are free, need no account, and their result pages carry context an aggregator strips out.
On mobile the same applies — every engine works from a browser, so an app is never required.
What if no engine finds anything?
Then the image has never been published, and every matching tool is structurally unable to help. They are lookups against an index; if nothing resembling your photo is in it, there is no result to return.
At that point the only remaining approach is inference rather than matching. AI geolocation reads the image itself and returns a probable region — weaker than an exact match, and available when no exact match exists.
Does the paid TinEye tier change the answer?
Only for volume. The paid API exists for programmatic and bulk searching, not for better matching. A one-off manual search gets the same results on the free tier, so paying is a throughput decision.
If you are running searches by hand a few times a week, the free tier is the product. If you are checking thousands of images, the question stops being "which alternative" and becomes "which API".
