How to Reverse Image Search on Your Phone

Short answer

To reverse image search on your phone, open images.google.com, yandex.com/images or tineye.com in any mobile browser and upload straight from your camera roll. Google Lens is also built into the Google app and Chrome on both iPhone and Android, so no separate app is ever required.

No app is required for any of this, which is worth saying because the App Store is full of "reverse image search" apps that are wrappers around the same free web endpoints, usually with adverts attached.

How do you do it on iPhone?

Two routes. In Chrome or the Google app, long-press an image and choose Search image with Google Lens. For a photo in your camera roll, open images.google.com in any browser, tap the camera icon and upload.

One iPhone-specific detail: HEIC photos sometimes upload awkwardly. Sharing through the Photos app normally converts them to JPEG for you, but if an upload is refused, that is the usual cause.

How do you do it on Android?

Google Lens is built into the Google app, Chrome and often the camera app itself. For a saved photo, open Lens and pick it from the gallery, or upload it at images.google.com in any browser.

Android has the smoother path here because Lens is integrated at the system level on most devices. The browser route still exists and behaves identically, which matters when you want an engine other than Google.

Why does mobile search find less than desktop?

Usually because of what you uploaded, not the device. Screenshots of a post are compressed and cropped, so they carry less detail than the original image — and detail is exactly what the matcher works from.

Instagram serves feed images at around 1080 px on the long edge, and a screenshot of that on a phone is smaller still. Below roughly 800 px, matching degrades quickly.

The fix is the same on every device: crop to one distinctive element and search that alone. A full street scene gives the engine a dozen competing signals; a single shopfront gives it one.

Are the paid mobile apps worth it?

Generally not. Most are interfaces to the same free engines, and several upload your image to their own servers on the way. The web versions are free, need no account, and give you the engine’s full result page.

If you do use one, treat the upload as leaving your device and check what the app says it retains. That caution applies to any image tool, including the free ones — which is worth knowing before you upload anything sensitive.
