Can Someone See Your Location on Snapchat?
· 10 min read
Short answer
Only Snapchat friends you pick can see your location, and sharing is off until you turn it on. They see you on Snap Map, updated while you use the app, or constantly if you allow background location. Ghost Mode hides you from friends, but not a live location you share or Snaps you submit to the Map.
Snap Map is one of the most popular maps on phones: Snap said in July 2026 that more than 450 million people use it every month. Location sharing on it is off by default, and Snapchatters can only share with friends they have accepted, the company says. So the short answer to who can see your location is nobody, until you choose.
The longer answer is about who counts as a friend, and what else the Map shows once you are on it. In September 2026, police in Alberta said they believe a man charged with child luring used Snap Map to track two young people, travelling to one of their homes. He was a stranger to them, and they had been talking to him on Snapchat; police linked the home visit to location sharing that was switched on.
Who can see your location on Snapchat?
Only friends you have both added, and only after you switch sharing on. You can share with all friends, all except a few, or only the friends you pick. Snap says there is no way to share your location with anyone who is not an accepted friend.
| Setting | Who can see your location | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost Mode | No one on the Map | Snapchat itself still receives your location; some accounts can set it to end after 3 or 24 hours |
| My Friends | Every friend you have added back, including friends you add later | Snapchat checks in from time to time to make sure you still want this |
| My Friends, Except… | All friends except the ones you leave out | Useful for hiding from one or two people |
| Only These Friends… | Just the friends you pick | The friends you pick are not notified |
| Live location with a friend | That friend, in real time | Carries on even in Ghost Mode and has its own off switch |
| Family Center | A parent, if a teen accepts their request | Snap said in 2024 that parents would also see which friends a teen shares with |
You will not appear on anyone’s Map until you are friends in both directions, have given the app location permission and have chosen to share, according to Snap. The catch is the word friend. Anyone you accept, including someone you have only met in the app, becomes eligible. If you share with all your friends, Snap now shows a pop-up when you add someone who may be outside your real-world network.
What can friends see about you on Snap Map?
More than a dot on a map. Depending on your settings, friends who can see your location may also see how long ago it updated, your battery level, a badge when you seem to be at home or school, a note when you have flown in from another city, and your home if you set one.
| Feature | What friends can see | How to switch it off |
|---|---|---|
| Last update | How long ago your location changed, when they tap your Bitmoji | Ghost Mode, or stop sharing with that friend |
| Battery level | Your battery percentage, marked “now” when the location is current | Ghost Mode, or stop sharing with that friend |
| Location badges | A badge when it looks like you are at home or at school | Settings, then My Privacy & Data, then Map |
| Travel Notifications | A “Flew from” note for up to 24 hours, and a Friend in Town alert when you reach their town | Settings, then Privacy Controls, then Map |
| My Home | Your home, marked on their Map | Tap yourself on the Map and edit or hide My Home |
| Arrival Notifications | An alert when you reach a place you chose, such as home or school | Off unless you set them up; they need Always location |
| Actionmoji | A Bitmoji pose based on your general area, the time of day or movement, such as a car or a plane | Ghost Mode, or stop sharing with that friend |
Each extra is small, but together they describe a routine: when you are at home, when you travel and where you tend to be. Snapchat works out the school badge itself; its help centre says you cannot pick or edit a school location. People clearly use these features. Snap says Snapchatters send more than 1.5 million Arrival Notifications a day.
Does Snapchat show your location when you are not using the app?
Only if you allow background location. If your phone lets Snapchat use location only while the app is open, friends see the last place you used it, and your location expires after 24 hours. With Always, friends see your real-time location even when Snapchat is closed.
The choice lives in your phone’s settings, not in Snapchat: it is the location permission you gave the app. Snap’s own advice is to share background location only with friends and family you trust, and for no longer than you need. Arrival Notifications only work with Always switched on, which also keeps you visible on the Map to everyone you share with, unless you are in Ghost Mode.
A phone that is switched off or has no connection cannot send updates. Friends see the last location it sent and, if they tap your Bitmoji, how long ago that was.
Can people see your location on Snapchat in Ghost Mode?
Not on the Map. Ghost Mode hides your location from all friends, for a set time or until you turn it off. It does not stop a live location you are sharing with a friend or hide Snaps you submit to the Map, and Snapchat itself still receives your location.
Snapchat’s Top Visitor trophy shows why that last point matters. Ghost Mode does not stop the app itself using your location if you have given it permission, so it can keep adding places you visit, and your Visited list is kept for the lifetime of your account unless you remove it or clear your location history. The list is private to you, but it exists.
Can someone see if you check their location on Snapchat?
No. Snapchat says friends are not notified when you tap their Bitmoji on the Map; it only opens a chat and shows how long ago their location updated. The same works in reverse, so you cannot tell who has looked at yours.
Can someone see your location on Snapchat without you knowing?
Not through location sharing, which needs your say-so and only reaches friends. The quieter routes are public Snaps, a live share you forgot, and a friend you accepted too quickly. Anything you submit to the Map is public, may stay visible for years, and can show where you were.
Snaps you submit to Snap Map, and Spotlight Snaps with a place tag, are public content, Snap says, and they can show up on the Map whatever your location setting. They may stay visible for years, though you can remove them from your profile, and you can submit without your name attached. On Stories, a Place sticker or a place name in the caption tells every viewer where you were.
The picture can give you away too. Snap’s own example is a Snap of the Eiffel Tower, which shows you were near it in Paris whatever your settings say. Street signs, shop fronts and the view from a window work the same way, which is why one selfie can reveal where you live and a country can be read from photo clues.
Use a screenshot or a copy with the location data removed, so the estimate rests on what the camera saw. On geospys.com, photo analysis comes with GeoSpy Premium: 7.99 US dollars a week or 29.99 US dollars a year, unlimited within fair use, and you can cancel at any time. It estimates a city and country, never an address, and uploaded photos are not stored. The GeoSpy iPhone app has a free trial.
Snapchat is not the only app that can give you away. On WhatsApp, a direct call can show the other person your IP address, which often points to your city, so Protect IP address in calls is worth a look too.
How do you stop someone from seeing your location on Snapchat?
Open Snap Map, tap the gear icon and turn on Ghost Mode, or narrow sharing to Only These Friends. Then end any live location share, switch off location badges and Travel Notifications, hide My Home, and set Snapchat’s location permission on your phone to While Using.
- Step 1Choose who sees youOn the Map, tap the gear icon to open Map Settings and choose Ghost Mode, My Friends, My Friends, Except… or Only These Friends. Some accounts can also set Ghost Mode to end after 3 or 24 hours.
- Step 2End live location sharesSnap says live location has its own setting, separate from Ghost Mode, so switching on Ghost Mode alone will not end a share. Stop it where you started it.
- Step 3Switch off the extrasIn Snapchat’s settings, the Map section of the privacy controls holds the location badges and Travel Notifications toggles. Hide or edit My Home by tapping yourself on the Map, and delete Arrival Notification places you no longer need.
- Step 4Limit background locationIn your phone’s settings, set Snapchat’s location permission to While Using rather than Always. Snap says this stops background sharing, and your location then expires 24 hours after you last used the app.
- Step 5Review your friends listLocation is only ever shared with friends, so the list is the real setting. Remove anyone you do not know in real life, and read Snapchat’s reminders about who can see you before dismissing them, as Snap advises.
- Step 6Clear your location historyIn Settings, Clear Data > Clear Location History removes your travel updates and the places Snapchat has recorded you visiting.
What should parents know about Snap Map?
Location sharing is off by default for teens too, and they can share only with accepted friends. Through Family Center, a parent can ask a teen to share live location and get alerts when the teen arrives at or leaves saved places. Snap also said parents would see which friends a teen shares with.
After the Alberta case, police urged parents to talk to their children about location sharing and to check the settings on their social media apps. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection told CBC News that its Cybertip.ca line received more than 3,000 reports of online child luring in 2025 alone. The same checks apply to what parents post about their children.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Snapchat show your exact location?
- To friends you share with, Snap Map shows where your phone says you are, which with GPS is usually close. Turning off Precise Location for Snapchat in your phone’s settings gives it only an approximate area; on Android, that is about 3 square kilometres.
- How long does your location stay on Snapchat?
- If Snapchat can use your location only while the app is open, your location expires from the Map 24 hours after you last used it. With Always, it stays until you turn sharing off or it expires, Snapchat says.
- Can people see your location on Snapchat if you are not friends?
- No. Location sharing works only between people who have added each other, and Snap says there is no option to share your location with someone who is not an accepted friend. Public Snaps you submit to the Map are the exception, because anyone can view those.
- Can Snapchat friends see where you live?
- They can if you set up My Home, which appears on the Map of every friend you share your location with, or if a location badge marks you as home. Hide My Home and turn off the badges if you do not want that.
